Chapter "A": Appearance
Whether we admit it or not, kids prefer meals that look good. They don't like mixed-up foods, oily rotis, or boring presentations. The combination of oily rotis and intermixed items in the भाजी (vegetable curry) is a turn-off for them.
The solution? We opted for a bento box – a tiffin with neat, small compartments. This not only allowed for a creative mix of different dishes but also improved the overall presentation. Imagine the joy on the faces of kids as they discover a treasure trove of delicious surprises, each compartment holding a new culinary delight. It's like opening a lunchbox and finding a mini food festival inside – a feast for the eyes and taste buds alike.
My learnings:
1) Magic in Compartments
Utilize the Bento Box as a canvas for culinary creativity. Picture this: a rainbow of colourful veggies, perfectly sliced fruits, and bite-sized delights, each in its designated space.
2) The Presentation Makeover: Turning "Ew" 😑 into "Wow! 😋"
Gone are the days of food monotony. With the compartmentalised lunchbox, every meal becomes a visual treat.
Engagement Quest: ⁉️

Chapter "C": Comfort
After facing the ups and downs of planning school meals and having seen the importance of making lunches unique, let's delve into the heart of my journey—the CAP philosophy. Here, I'll share how Comfort, Appearance, and Palate come together, turning ordinary lunchboxes into sources of joy and cherished memories.
I learned that if kids genuinely enjoy the food, they won't make excuses for not finishing their tiffin. In the first 15 days, Miss R was leaving half her tiffin untouched, claiming she needed time to cut roti (fulka et al) into pieces and manage the contents. Unfortunately, this process was taking up too much time, leaving her with an unfinished meal. 😞
To tackle this, I decided to pre-cut the roti (fulka et al)) for her, focusing on one problem at a time! 💡
P.S.: As the last line suggests, I decided to tackle one problem at a time. We must NOT make children crippled in managing their food. We made sure that Miss R must not ask for help in cutting roti (fulka et al)) at dinner. The help was strictly offered only for lunch box and until the tiffin chapter was autonomous.
Tiffins shouldn't mirror our home thalis

Tiffins shouldn't mirror our home thalis; they deserve to stand out. The challenge lies in crafting a packed lunch that aligns with your child's preferences while ensuring their comfort.
Regardless of their eating habits, kids are often more inclined to play, chat with friends, or engage in spontaneous activities during their lunch break.
🍱✨
Miss R is a foodie.. So why is she complaining about finishing the tiffin?
RCA tells:
She wants to utilize the recess for many things.
Chat 💭
Play 👏
Dance 👯
Loo 🚾
She wants to also eat, because she is hungry. 🥦 🍱
She is juggling to prioritize. 😣
Hence, the lunch should win on these three things, I call CAP!
Comfort
Appearance
Palate
Comfort: First, the lunch should be super easy to enjoy. From easy-to-hold bites to a layout that makes lunch stress-free, we want it to be a relaxing experience for your little one.
Appearance: Second, the lunchbox should look amazing! Beautiful presentations not only make eating more fun but also get your child excited. When the food looks good, it adds to the joy!
Palate: Lastly, the taste is super important. Lunch should be like a mix of wonderful flavors that make your child love food. By introducing different tasty things, we not only make their taste buds happy but also help them enjoy lots of different foods.
Balancing these 3 pillars of an ideal tiffin early in the morning is not so trivial, but is definitely rewarding..

Tiffin has been a topic of research for millenia. And we were not the only ones to get started. Our young one started attending school in 2022 after the deadly Corona pandemic got over. The relief was real, but it did come with a lot of weightlifting in terms of planning meals ahead of time, prepping for the day next, getting up 60 mins before 6.30 AM, executing the planned recipe and packing it up with a decent presentation!
The task was to plan three meals per the school timing
Breakfast - 6.15 AM (Consumed at home)
Lunch (मोठा डबा) - 9.30 AM (At school)
Snack (छोटा डबा ) - 12 PM (At school)
The story does not end here! When Miss R (who is not a fussy eater at all!) returns from school and hits your sweet little ego, you go ten steps back!
A few of her expressions I recall —>
😑 (Clever people might have guessed this as the consequence of condensation)
This was enough of a signal to think differently. Soon, I started revamping the way her meals were prepped and packed.
Wanna know more about this?
Do follow the series on the tiffin stories!
P.S.: While the temptation to write this series exclusively in Marathi is strong, I've decided to employ a blend of English and Marathi to ensure a wider audience can connect with it.
